The tab top allows you to hang the curtains without the fabric scrunching, providing a pleated effect instead.  In the photographs, the 96-inch panels were used to create a pooling effect, and the curtain rod is 5 inches above the top of the window. If you want the curtains to hit the ground without pooling, opt for the shorter size (if available) or hang your curtain rod higher on the wall.
